Prop design is a favourite area for me, and I was very lucky to design many props for major films and TV shows, including Dune Part 2, Dune Part 3, Black Doves (Netflix), Kennedy (Netflix) and many more. Below are a sample of some other props, either personal projects or from other films/tv done over the years.
The modular gun below was created as demo project for my new Gnomon Workshop tutorial Introduction To Fusion
Design for a police DNA scanner gadget, created for my tutorial ‘Designing Props for Film’ with the Gnomon Workshop.
A prop ‘painting’ created for the award-winning short film ‘Saving All My Love’. I painted this digitally in the style of an oil-painting and it was then printed and further aged by the art department for the physical prop. It was also animated in post at key moments in the story. Dir Kristina Thomas. PD Blair Barnette.
Knight statue sketch in Photoshop created for the BBC ‘Ghost Story For Christmas: Woman of Stone’ (Dir. Mark Gatiss/Prop Master P.R. Smith). Some stills from the final production below showing the final sculpted character.
A pair of futuristic mini-binoculars. I always loved Luke’s in Star Wars so wanted to create my own. Modelled in Fusion from a concept sketch (below) in Photoshop.
A boar mask created for a TV show, sculpted in Zbrush plus initial design sketches (below) in Photoshop. I believe about thirty of these were 3D printed and finished with gold-effect before the scene they were needed for was cut from the script.
A robot DJ booth/screen created for the Money 20/20 show in Las Vegas. This was a very complex project as we had to hide a full music PA system and motor systems to operate the wheels and arms within the design, whilst also ensuring it was safe. This is the final sketch, I then modelled it the outer cladding in Fusion in collaboration with the engineering team who did the internal frame. Some shots of assembly and the final prop below.
